US Government Ready to Support Airplane Crash Investigations in China

US Government Ready to Support Airplane Crash Investigations in China

The US government and Boeing are ready to help the Chinese government investigate the cause of the downing of the Boeing 737-800 China Eastern Airlines plane, Monday, March 21, 2022.

Boeing Chief Executive Dave Calhoun told employees it had offered its technical experts the full support of the investigation into the crash.

Calhoun said in an email to employees that he was constrained by what Boeing could say about the investigation led by the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

“Believe that we will do everything we can to support our customers and accident investigations during this difficult time, guided by our commitment to safety, transparency and integrity every step of the way,” Calhoun said Monday.

Separately, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it had appointed a senior air safety investigator as a US accredited representative for the investigation into the crash of the China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 near Wuzhou, China.

Representatives from Boeing, CFM, the joint venture General Electric and Safran that manufactures the engines, and the Federal Aviation Administration will act as technical advisers, the NTSB said.

Under international agreements, the United States can be a representative of the crash investigation because the plane was manufactured in the United States.

It is not clear if or when the NTSB will travel to the crash site in China.

After the 2018 Boeing 737 MAX crash in Indonesia, the NTSB immediately dispatched investigators to participate in the Indonesian government’s investigation.

NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said in 2019 testimony before Congress that during the search for the “black boxes” – the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR) – “an NTSB investigator was stationed on one of the search vessels.”

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the plane flying from the city of Kunming to the southern center of Guangzhou lost air contact over the city of Wuzhou in the Guangxi region on Monday afternoon.

In Guangzhou, staff helped the families of the affected passengers and nine crew members. There was no flight information after the plane descended from a height of 7,925 meters in just three minutes.

A video broadcast by several Chinese media appeared showing a plane diving vertically. There has been no verification of the authenticity of the image recording.

The disaster sparked an unusually fast public reaction. Chinese President Xi Jinping said he was shocked and ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the crash. Xi also called for airlines to pay close attention to security, according to CCTV.

The US National Transportation Safety Board said it had appointed a senior investigator as a representative for the investigation into the plane crash. Officials from Boeing, General Electric and the Federal Aviation Administration will also serve as technical advisers.
