Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has agreed a contract until 2026 with a 1bn euro (£841m) buyout clause.

Araujo’s previous contract with the Spanish club was set to expire in 2023.

The Uruguayan, 23, has played 26 times in La Liga this season, scoring four goals, including one in a 4-0 win against Real Madrid.

“He has proved himself to be the present and future for Barca, becoming an integral part of the Blaugrana defence,” the club said in a statement.

“His talents in defence and scoring goals mean he is a key player for years to come.”

Araujo joined Barcelona on a five-year contract from Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018.

In 2019, he came off the bench to make his first-team debut against Sevilla but was sent off 14 minutes later after bringing down Javier Hernandez.

He has made nine appearances for his national side Uruguay, making his senior debut in 2020.

“FC Barcelona and the player Ronald Araujo have reached an agreement to renew his contract until 30 June 2026. The buyout clause stipulated is set at 1bn. The signing of the new contract will take place on Friday 29 April at 1.30pm CEST,” a club statement read.

The Uruguayan signed a contract with Barcelona B back in August 2018, and was promoted to the first team last season, where he became a regular starter, winning the Copa Del Rey with the Catalans. He was one of the lowest paid players in the team, and Barcelona had problems reaching an agreement due to an already inflated wage bill that the club was trying to reduce, adhering to La Liga’s strict financial rules.

The 23-year-old has made 39 appearances for Barca this season, and scored four goals, including the header in the 4-0 El Clasico win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. He is a wall at the back for the Blaugrana. Last season, in La Liga, Araujo was not dribbled past by any player.

FC Barcelona are sitting in second place in La Liga, 15 points behind league leaders Real Madrid, with no chance of getting their hands on a trophy this season. The loss to Rayo Vallecano was Xavi’s third successive loss at home this season in all competitions.

FC Barcelona will face Mallorca, Betis, Celta de Vigo, Getafe, and Villarreal in the remaining five games of the season in La Liga.

Araujo signs new Barcelona contract that includes €1 billion release clause as Premier League clubs miss out
The Uruguayan centre-back has committed his future to the club with a deal that runs until 2026

Ronald Araujo has agreed to sign a new contract at Barcelona, tying him to the club until 2026.

The Catalan side had been working on signing the centre-back to a new deal for some time, with his previous contract set to expire in 2023.

The uncertainty around his future resulted in reports linking him to Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, but the Uruguay international has opted to remain at Camp Nou.

What are the terms of Araujo’s new contract?
The 23-year-old will spend an additional three years at the Blaugrana.

The deal also includes a release clause set at €1 billion (£840m/$1.1bn).

“FC Barcelona and the player Ronald Araujo have reached an agreement to renew his contract until 30 June 2026. The buyout clause stipulated is set at €1bn,” the club announced.

“The signing of the new contract will take place on Friday 29 April at 1.30pm CEST on the field at Camp Nou.”

How has Araujo performed for Barcelona?
Araujo joined Barcelona from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018 and made his senior debut for the club in October 2019.

He has since gone on to make 78 appearances for the club, half of which have come in the 2021-22 campaign.

The centre-back has scored four goals in his 39 matches so far this term as he was handed an important role in the team.

Due to his performances in the heart of the defence, Xavi urged the club to make a contract extension for Araujo one of their top priorities this season.

However, talks dragged on and Barca were in danger of losing the defender amid interest from the Premier League.

But, as GOAL reported in early-April, the two parties made progress in negotiations and his representative, Edmundo Kabchi, confirmed that Araujo would commit his future to the club.

Madrid, April 26, 2022 (AFP) – Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has agreed a new contract until 2026 with a buy-out clause set at 1 billion euros, the club announced on Tuesday.

Araujo’s previous deal was due to expire next year and his commitment comes as a huge boost to Barca, who see the 23-year-old as a key player for the future.

Barcelona’s financial problems mean the club cannot currently compete with Europe’s richest clubs and Araujo had reportedly been attracting interest from teams in the Premier League.

After joining Barca’s B team from Uruguayan side Boston Rover in 2018, Araujo made an eventful first-team debut against Sevilla a year later, when he was sent off 14 minutes after coming on as a substitute.

But the youngster quickly found his feet and has emerged as a first-choice starter in Xavi Hernandez’s defence this term.

He has made 26 appearances this season in La Liga, scoring four goals, including one in the 4-0 thrashing of Real Madrid in March.

“He has proved himself to be the present and future for Barca, becoming an integral part of the Blaugrana defence,” the club said in a statement.

“His talents in defence and scoring goals mean he is a key player for years to come as his tally of four goals this season proves.”
