Angel Di Maria on Barcelona's Radar

Barcelona are reportedly one of four clubs battling for the signature of Paris Saint-Germain striker Angel Di Maria.

The 34-year-old’s contract with the French champions expires this season. The Argentine is expected to leave on a free transfer this summer despite the option of a 12-month extension.

Di Maria has struggled to start in Ligue 1 this season following the arrival of compatriot Lionel Messi and he looks set to have no shortage of suitors ahead of the 2022-23 season.

According to TYC Sports via Sports Mole, Sunday (4/24/2022) Barcelona are vying for the signature of the former Real Madrid player. However, they will face stiff competition to win the race for his services.

The report adds that Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Benfica, where he spent three years between 2007 and 2010 before moving to Real Madrid, have also been notified of Di Maria’s availability.

Di Maria has scored four goals and provided seven assists in 27 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season and won his fifth Ligue 1 title.

Angel Di Maria announced his retirement from the Argentine national team after the 2022 World Cup. Lionel Messi is also thinking about the same plan.

Di Maria has enjoyed a brilliant international career. He was part of the Argentina squad that won the Copa America last year. He scored the winning goal against Brazil in the final and triumphed at the Olympics in 2008 and the Under-20 World Cup in 2007.

The former Manchester United winger also experienced several near misses. He lost two Copa America finals and the 2014 World Cup final for 121 caps. Di Maria’s contract at PSG expires in June and it is unclear if he will stay in France.

“I just wanted to say thank you for the incredible love I have received,” Di Maria wrote on Instagram, shortly after Argentina beat Venezuela 3-0 on Thursday night.

“I’ve always dreamed of everything I experienced on this beautiful night,” he continued.

“It was probably my last game in this shirt in Argentina and to be able to say it was a beautiful night is an understatement. Thank you, thank you and a thousand times thank you,” wrote Di Maria.
