A review of the side effects recorded after administering 298 million doses of mRNA vaccines against the coronavirus in the United States reveals that most are “mild and temporary”, as published today by “The Lancet Infectious Diseases”.
Among the 340,522 cases of side effects reported between December 2020 and June 2021 to the US Vaccine Safety Rating System VAERS, 92% (313,499) were “not serious,” while less than 1% of participants in the program had to receive medical attention for that reason.
They identify more than 20 genetic variants that predispose the severe form of COVID-19
The most common symptoms were headache (20% of cases), fatigue (17%), fever (16%), chills (16%), and pain (15%).
6.6% of reported side effects were classified as “serious”, the most common of which was “shortness of breath”, which was experienced by 4,175 program participants.
“The speed with which COVID-19 vaccines have been administered under emergency use, especially in older populations, is unprecedented,” said study lead author David Shay, a member of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. and US Disease Prevention (CDC).
Some post-covid-19 symptoms are more frequent and persistent in women
“The monitoring of the safety of COVID-19 vaccines is the most robust that has been done in the history of the United States. The two complementary surveillance systems that have been used for this study should boost confidence that mRNA vaccines are safe,” said Hannah Rosenblum, co-author of the analysis.
In Rosenblum’s opinion, “vaccines are the most effective tool to prevent severe COVID-19. The benefits of immunization in preventing severe illness and death are strong in favor of vaccination.” (I)
