Croatia salvage draw with penalty against France

France are still searching for their first win in this year’s Nations League after a late Andrej Kramaric penalty secured a 1-1 draw for Croatia in Split on Monday.

Didier Deschamps made ten changes to the side that fell to Denmark last time out, with Aurelien Tchouameni the only player keeping his spot, while Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe ended the night as unused substitutes.

The best chances fell to France early on, with Christopher Nkunku seeing a goal called back for offside. Moussa Diaby and Tchouameni had chances as well, while Ante Budimir responded for the home side.

Despite so much firepower on the bench, it was France who opened the scoring in the 52nd minute. A well-worked move started by Adrien Rabiot saw the Juventus midfielder link with Nkunku and then Wissam Ben Yedder, before placing his left-footed strike out of the reach of Dominik Livakovic.

However, just like against Denmark, France saw a win slip out of their reach. Just minutes after coming on for Diaby, Jonathan Clauss took Andrej Kramaric down in the penalty area.

After initially being ruled out for offside, a quick check from VAR resulted in the penalty being awarded. Despite the pressure of a second consecutive defeat for Croatia, Kramaric calmly slotted home to give both side’s their first points of the competition.
